With an understanding that I would return the next day, I took dinner with Eliza largely in silence. I had little to say past the polite courtesies of the table and did not expect to pursue the inquiry further that evening, taking my leave when the meal had concluded.

Her correspondence with David Esdaile suggested that he had reconciled himself somewhat to the idea of Eliza’s possession. From his own account, Eliza—or, rather, “Fi”—had caused the elder Esdaile’s death; this, too, would be part of the guilt that Eliza bore. But what, if anything, I could make of this remained to be seen.
